June 19, 2018
Dixie State University welcomes to campus KSL news anchor and BYU football and basketball play-by-play announcer Dave McCann as the keynote speaker of the annual Dixie Leadership Conference for high school students.
The community is invited to attend this speaking engagement at 2 p.m. on June 27 in the M. Anthony Burns Arena. The address is part of the annual leadership training camp that will bring 600 students from 30 schools in Utah, Nevada and Arizona to the Dixie State campus.
“I’m excited to have Dave McCann come,” conference coordinator Steve Bringhurst said. “It’s a very nice opportunity to have him on campus to speak to the students.”
McCann will discuss the importance of service as well as share his greatest career experiences and the impact these happenings have had on him and others. Specifically, he will discuss his coverage of the October 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas and how the community has come together since the tragic event.
A graduate of Orem High School and BYU, McCann was hired by ABC to work as a reporter for Good Morning America prior to his senior year of college. Since then, he spent nearly 20 years anchoring news and sports in Las Vegas as well as offering play-by-play commentary for UNLV football. He is now in his seventh year anchoring the evening news at KSL-TV in Salt Lake City. Over the years, McCann has reported from the deserts of Morocco, the mountains of Sochi, Russia, during the 2014 Winter Olympics, and the sidelines at Super Bowl 52.
In addition to McCann’s address, the conference will feature breakout sessions covering over 70 leadership topics including stress management, accountability, responsibility, and preparation. It also will include presentations addressing suicide prevention, cyber bullying, and cyber safety plus a tremendous learning experience from national public speaker Chris Brown. Those interested in attending the conference can register at workshops.dixie.edu.
