DSU Dental Hygiene Students Excel at State Poster Presentation Competition

By Lisa M. Welch RDH, BS, MSDH

On Thursday, February 21st Dixie State University Dental Hygiene Students Jasmine Wilcox and Jordyn Mitchell braved the winter storm to travel to Salt Lake City in order to represent DSU Dental Hygiene at a poster presentation competition for dental hygiene students from all over the State of Utah. Their efforts were not wasted as the students took first place in the State competition with their presentation Chasing Lasers. The presentation was a review of the current research regarding the use of laser therapy to treat peri-implantitis (infected tooth implants). The students stated "that with implants becoming a common treatment in dental offices we wanted to understand why, with over five million placements yearly, more than 100,000 are affected with peri-implantitis and are failing. We wondered what more could be being done to save them. We found that lasers, a new tool in the dental and dental hygiene arsenal, were being used successfully used to treat failing implants and we wanted to make other dental professionals aware of the results of the current research about this."

Jasmin and Jordyn, by traveling to Salt Lake and sharing the findings from your literature review you were able to reach dental professionals from all over the State, which will contribute to the improved future dental health of patients. Thank you for doing such a great job of representing DSU Dental Hygiene. We are so proud of you. Well done.
