Class of 2019, Be Commencement Ready with These Helpful Tips

By Jyl Hall

Commencement is just around the corner — it’s set to take place on Friday, May 3, in Trailblazer Stadium — and you won’t want to miss these helpful tidbits on what to expect.

Graduates

Graduates will need to have a cap and gown for the ceremony. These can be picked up at the Grad Fair, which will be held Wednesday and Thursday, May 1 and 2, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Stephen and Marcia Wade Alumni House, located at 684 East 500 South. Honor stoles and cords as well as gifts, food and DSU memorabilia will also be available at the Grad Fair.

On Commencement Day, all graduates will need to assemble with their colleges no later than 7:15 a.m. on the lawn just north of the Gardner Student Center. Please be in your cap and gown with the tassel hanging to the right side. The processional will begin at 8 a.m. Detailed maps of where the college will be lining up are available here. There will be no rehearsal, so please come prepared.

During the ceremony, graduates will receive their diploma covers. The actual diplomas will be mailed out within six weeks of final grade postings and will be sent to the address indicated on their graduation application.

Other helpful tips and tricks for graduates:

  • A water bottle will be beneath each seat at the ceremony
  • There will be two lines of graduates; be sure to line up in single file in the same line (not side to side) with the person you would like to sit next to during the ceremony
  • Feel free to decorate your caps and show your Dixie Spirit

Parents, Guests and Community Members

The ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. and the doors open at 7 a.m. There are no tickets for commencement, so seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests are not allowed to save seats.

No air horns, posters, cow bells or helium balloons will be allowed during the ceremony, as these items may block views or make it difficult to hear graduate names as they are announced. If you can’t make the ceremony but still want to watch your graduate, there will be a link available on DSU’s website that will take you to watch a live stream.

The parking lots will be open during commencement but spots are limited, so parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
